Remove Solid Backgrounds — Local & Private
This tool uses local color-keying in your browser: it samples the corner colors of your image, then removes pixels that fall within a color tolerance of that background value, producing a transparent PNG. Everything runs on your device — no upload, no server, no account.
It's ideal for product shots, studio photos, ID photos, and any image where the subject sits on a solid white, gray, or near-uniform background. For AI segmentation that handles complex edges like hair and fur, use AI Background Removal (cloud processing).
Features
100% Local Processing
Color-keying runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device — complete privacy.
Color Tolerance Control
Fine-tune how aggressive the keying is with the Color Tolerance slider, and soften edges with Edge Softness.
Transparent PNG Output
Download a ready-to-use transparent PNG for product listings, logos, avatars, and composites.
Best for Solid Backgrounds
White studio backdrops, plain walls, green screens, and product-shot backgrounds key out cleanly and fast.
Zero Upload, Zero Wait
No server round-trip means instant results even for large photos (auto-resized to ~2.5MP for speed).
Free, No Signup
No watermarks, no accounts, no file limits, no premium tier. Just upload, key, and download.
How Local Background Removal Works
This is a color-based (chroma-key) method, not AI segmentation:
Step 1 — Sample: The tool averages the four corners of your image to estimate the background color.
Step 2 — Key out: Every pixel within your chosen Color Tolerance of that color becomes transparent. Edge Softness feathers the boundary to reduce fringing.
Step 3 — Download: A transparent PNG is generated locally and offered for download. Close the tab and nothing was ever sent to a server.
Because it's color-based, results are best when the background is uniform. Textured or busy backgrounds will leave artifacts — for those cases, try our AI Background Removal instead.
Tips for Best Results
Use a solid background. A white wall or studio backdrop produces the cleanest cutout. The more uniform the background, the fewer leftover pixels.
Good lighting helps. Well-lit photos with even illumination give a more uniform background color to key against. Avoid shadows on the backdrop.
Adjust tolerance if fringes remain. If a halo of background color stays around the subject, raise Color Tolerance slightly; if it eats into the subject, lower it.
Fine-tune after download. Open the transparent PNG in any editor (Photoshop, Canva, Photopea) to clean up edges, add a drop shadow, or composite with another image.
FAQ
How does this background remover work?
It uses local color-keying in your browser. The tool samples the corner colors of your image as the background, then removes pixels within your chosen color tolerance, leaving a transparent PNG. No upload, no server, no AI.
What backgrounds does it work best on?
Solid, near-uniform backgrounds — white studio backdrops, plain gray walls, green screens, product-shot backdrops. The more uniform the background, the cleaner the cutout. Textured backgrounds will leave artifacts because this is a color-based method.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device. If you need AI segmentation for complex edges, use our cloud-based AI Background Removal instead.
Can it handle hair, fur, or complex edges?
No — this local color-keying tool removes whole background areas by color, so it cannot preserve fine details like hair strands. For portraits with hair or other complex edges, use our cloud AI Background Removal tool.
How do I get a cleaner cutout?
Use a photo where the subject clearly stands out from a solid background. Raise Color Tolerance slightly if background fringes remain, and increase Edge Softness to feather the boundary. Cropping first with our Image Resize or crop tool also helps.
Is this really free?
Yes — completely free with no watermarks, no signup, and no file limits. Because processing happens in your browser, there are no server costs to pass on to you.
Can I batch process multiple photos?
No — this tool processes one image at a time. For batch compression or conversion, use our Image Compress or Image Convert tools, which support up to 50 files at once.
What format is the output?
The output is a transparent PNG at the processed resolution. Large photos are auto-resized (~2.5MP) to keep local keying fast, so output resolution may be smaller than the original for very large images.
